The power conversion efficiency of OPV cells has been growing steadily at +0.5% per year from 1990, mainly due to the discovery of better performing materials. However, faster progress is needed for a commercial breakthrough. For this to happen, new concepts are required, involving cells based on innovative engineered architectures (R2R printed tandem cell) and new high-performance materials (low band gap, e.g. ~1.5 eV, electrodes, high-performance interface, barrier adhesive).
