PhD Studentship in the Coastal Impacts of Marine Renewables at University of Plymouth

Overview
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship in the School of Marine Science and Engineering. The studentship will start on 1st October 2011.

Project Description
The project will focus on coastal impacts in the lee of Wave Hub, a world-leading test centre for wave energy devices off the North Coast of Cornwall. Previous consultations showed the main public concern was on possible effects on beaches in the lee of Wave Hub, particularly the effect on surfing waves. Any changes in coastal waves will also affect areas of coastal erosion and rip current patterns, which have implications for coastal management and bather safety respectively.

In conjunction with the Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE), new wave measurements from the PRIMaRE HF wave radar combined with the established 3-year archive of 3D beach surveys obtained prior to wave energy device deployment, provides an unprecedented world-leading opportunity to characterise the effects of waves on the coast in the lee of a wave farm. This should allow the development of a generic methodology for assessing coastal environmental impacts of offshore renewables, providing invaluable input to the EU SOWFIA project that is looking to develop pan-European policy guidance on such environmental impacts.

The successful candidate will be involved with a wide range of research techniques including semi structured interviews and open questionnaires with coastal stakeholders, beach surveying using our quad-bike mounted RTK-GPS system and determining the characteristics and extent of wave shadowing in the lee of Wave Hub using our WERA HF wave radar facility.

Eligibility
Applicants should have (at least) a first or upper second class honours degree in an Ocean Science, Geography, or Engineering area and preferably a relevant MSc/MRes qualification. MSc level modules in Research Skills, Mathematical Modelling, Coastal and Estuarine Sediment Dynamics, and Coastal Erosion and Protection are available. Candidates will develop competencies in field data collection and data analysis techniques (e.g. Matlab).

The studentship is supported for 3 years and includes full Home/EU tuition fees plus a stipend of £13,590 per annum. The studentship will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home/EU fees with relevant qualifications. Applicants normally required to cover overseas fees will have to cover the difference between the Home/EU and the overseas tuition fee rates (approximately £9,250 per annum).

The work will focus on the integrated management of heterogeneous user related information derived from different (personal) devices with the help of a portal. .
The research group has broad experience within the area of Web Portal technology, semantic description of resources and context-adaptability.
The PhD research will be performed under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Birgitta König-Ries and Prof. Dr. Martin Welsch in cooperation with the IBM Germany Research & Development Laboratories at Böblingen, Germany.



The aim of the project is to perform research and develop prototypes that use Web Portals to provide an integrated, user centric management of heterogeneous devices and the event and data oriented information they can provide and the services they can offer.
Requirements:
We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:
An excellent Masters or equivalent degree in Computer Science or a closely related field
Experience within the fields of context modeling, user modeling, semantic web, mobile application development and/or Web Portal technology are of advantage
Very good programming and software engineering skills
Very good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing
Very good teaming and communication skills, as this project will be executed as a joint venture between the IBM R&D Lab in Boeblingen and the University of Jena
Skills in German are of advantage

Program pasca sarjana Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Magister Teknologi Informasi bersama dengan Kementrian Komunikasi dan Informatika RI menyelenggarakan beasiswa pendidikan S2 bagi pegawai negeri sipil untuk program Pascasarjana/S2 Chief Information Officer.

Maksud dan Tujuan

Ketentuan Umum – Kriteria Calon Penerima Beasiswa
Calon penerima beasiswa diharapkan memenuhi kriteria sebagai berikut:
Pegawai Negeri Sipil (PNS) yang ditempatkan di lembaga-lembaga departemen, non departemen, baik di lingkungan pemerintahan pusat maupun daerah.
Memiliki masa kerja sekurang-kurangnya 2 tahun terhitung mulai tanggal diangkat menjadi PNS dalam gelar S1 pada instansi yang bersangkutan.
Bidang kerja yang ditangani terkait dengan pengembangan e-Government di lingkungan asalnya.
Terbuka untuk semua sektor/bidang/dinas di instansi pemerintah.
Usia maksimum 40 tahun pada saat mendaftar.
Belum memiliki gelar S2 dan tidak sedang mengikuti program pendidikan S2 di tempat lain.
Tidak menerima dan/atau sedang menerima beasiswa dari lembaga lain.
Persyaratan
Calon penerima beasiswa diharapkan memenuhi persyaratan sebagai berikut:
Ijazah dan transkrip akan akademik S1 yang telah dilegalisir.
IPK S1 minimum 3,0.
Skor minimal TOEFL 450 dari PPB UGM atau ITP-TOEFL oleh institusi yang ditunjuk oleh The Indonesian Internasional Education Foundation.
Skor minimal TPA 500 yang dikeluarkan oleh Bappenas, Puspendik Litbang Diknas dan UGM.
Bagi yang belum memiliki nilai TPA dan/atau TOEFL (seperti point 3 dan 4) diperkenankan mengumpul berkas pendaftaran.
Asal Program Studi S1 memperoleh Akreditasi oleh BAN PT.
Surat rekomendasi dari 2 orang/pihak yang mengetahui kemampuan akademik.
Surat rekomendasi dari pejabat berwenang (minimum pimpinan instansi setingkat Eselon II) yang menjelaskan bahwa bidang kerja yang ditangani terkait dengan pengembangan E-Government.

Scholarships are only available for accredited courses at UK universities. International students who are or who will be studying in the UK are welcome to apply.
You must supply full, correct details of your selected university (e.g. ‘Manchester Metropolitan’, not ‘MMU’), degree type and course title (e.g. ‘BEng Electrical & Electronic Engineering’) and the UCAS code for your course (e.g. H600). If you are not sure of any of these, please check with the university. Applications with incomplete or incorrect course details will not be accepted.
Date of commencement is the month and year you started or propose to start the degree course (not including foundation years).
If you are not already at university, please scan and send any documentation from UCAS or your chosen university which confirms registration on your degree course.
If you do not require a visa to study in the UK, you may apply for an undergraduate scholarship for degree courses starting in 2011. If you have not yet applied to universities and are applying for a scholarship to start in 2011, you must still complete the full details of the degree course for which you intend to apply, in order to enable the Panel to make an in-principle decision.

Scholarship Details: The provision of development aid of the Slovak Republic (SR) in the area of education takes the form of the award of scholarships of the Government of the SR that are consistent with the conditions approved by the Government Resolution No.344/2010 of 25 May 2010 for developing countries and for Slovaks living abroad, the Government Resolution No. 625/2008, of 17 September 2008, for academic year 2011/2012.


The official range of scholarship positions available is annually notified through the diplomatic offices of the SR abroad.
Under the development aid for the developing countries, the official offer is sent to the ministry of foreign affairs of the relevant country in accordance with the approved breakdown of countries and scholarship places in particular academic years.
