UK PhD Scholarships in Political Science and International Studies at University of Birmingham

Postgraduate Research Scholarships
The Department is offering two scholarships of £10,000/year for 3 years to new applicants starting a PhD research degree in the Department of Political Science and International Studies, 2007/8

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The £10,000 scholarship comprises two parts:
A lump sum scholarship component of approximately £6500 per year
A component of approximately £3500 per year comprising income from Graduate Teaching Assistant duties. These duties will consist of four hours of teaching per week during term time, two office hours per week during term time, and examination and coursework marking duties. Specific rates of pay and conditions will be specified by contract.


Applicants will be expected to apply to external sources of funding also; if they are successful, they will be expected to take up the external funding rather than the University of Birmingham scholarship.


The scholarship competition is open to Home, EU and International students, studying on a full time basis.


Existing Postgraduate Research students in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Birmingham are not eligible to apply.


A scholarship committee comprising the Head of Department, Director of the Graduate School, Director of Postgraduate Research and the Research Director, will select the successful applicants. Applicants may be required to participate in a telephone interview. The decision of the committee cannot be appealed.


Successful applicants will be informed in writing in mid-June.

PHD PROPOSAL

PhD proposal of up to two typed A4 pages (in 12 point font) covering the rationale for and significance of the proposed research, the theoretical framework for the thesis, and the methodology to be used. Candidates may attach bibliographic references only on an additional sheet.

REFERENCES

Please provide the names of two academic referees. Referees are asked to e-mail their references to Elizabeth Bradley (Email: e.bradley@bham.ac.uk) before the closing date, stating the name of the applicant in the subject header.

POTENTIAL SUPERVISOR(S)

Please name up to 3 potential supervisors, and indicate whether/what contact you have had with them. We encourage all applicants to approach potential supervisors for advice and comments on the proposal before submitting an application. Please indicate your reasons for applying to POLSIS.
